Saturday 27th saw the return of the worlds richest race, The Pegasus World Cup Invitational, held at Gulfstream Park, Florida for only the 2nd time ever. After last year's triumphant win by none other than Longines World's Best Race Horse, Arrogate, all eyes were on the clear favourite, Gun Runner who followed in Arrogate's footsteps and won The Breeders Cup Classic in 2017.
The line-up for the $16million contest looked like this:
1) Singing Bullet
2) West Coast
3) Stellar Wind
4)Sharp Azteca
5)Collected
6)Gunnevera
7)Fear The Cowboy
8)War Story
9)Toast Of New York
10)Gun Runner
11)Seeking The Soul
12)Giant Expectations
As the only British trained horse in the line up, my heart was with Toast Of New York but Gun Runner flew out of the gates in true Pegasus style and proved the wide draw meant nothing if only more motivation. Florent Geroux certainly knew what he was doing as he sat back and chased the leader up until 4f out, upon hitting the final turn he pulled away accompanied by West Coast, both going 15 lengths clear.
A good run for his money but West Coast was just not fast enough to beat The Horse of the Year, Gun Runner, who won by 2 and a half in the end followed a huge 11 lengths back by Gunnevera in third place. Now Gun Runner has successfully completed his 6th G1 win out of 7, his only 'loss' being second to Arrogate in the 2017 Dubai World Cup, he will go off to stud with life time earnings of just under $16 million.
Who will be crowned next years winner of The Worlds Richest Race and will they follow in the footsteps of our first 2 winners and take the 2018 Breeders Cup Classic first?
